What I’m Working On This Week: 10/02/14

I’m finally nearing the summit of the huge pile of custom and regular orders I’ve taken in since Christmas. I was hoping to be finished everything before I leave for my birthday trip to Montreal this weekend and it looks like it might actually happen!

The Aurora Dress, is coming along. I’ve been working on it here and there between orders and on weekends. I had a sample almost done – all it needed was a hem – when I decided, rather inconveniently, that I didn’t like it. So it’s back to the drawing board. Continue reading

Over the weekend, I reshot The Bacon Dress. I wasn’t happy with how the listing pictures of the troubled dress turned out the first time, but decided to run with them because the dress was already several weeks behind schedule. Like every other stage of creating The Bacon Dress, the original photoshoot was mired with problems. I came to that photoshoot armed with every idea for styling and marketing that came to me during the three months it took to get from concept to sample. Nothing worked. Feeling defeated by this dress, I took the best pictures we had and put the dress up in the shop. Over the ensuing weeks, I began working on the big bridesmaid dress order while attending a few holiday parties decked out in my new Bacon Dress. Now, something happens when you sew four identical dresses, you live several days of your life with busy hands and a quiet mind, I kept finding myself thinking about The Bacon Dress. It was an amazing dress and I received compliments every time I wore it, but I knew that first photoshoot didn’t capture everything I had worked so hard to create. My mind wandered on about how friends hadn’t realized the fabric looked like bacon until they were eating appetizers or sitting down for dinner, they needed an association with food to really see the dress. that’s when the idea struck me, I searched everywhere for pink cotton candy in the dead of winter.

What I’m Working On This Week: 20/01/14

I’ll be working on the big, bridesmaid dress order for most of this week. Nevertheless, I’ve bravely scheduled work on The Aurora Dress sample to begin this Friday. If fuelled by the proper ratio of tea and gummy bears, I might just have a sample to photograph and list by the weekend!

Spending all of January sewing bright coral fit and flare bridesmaid dresses, along with the occasional summer dress for  my Australian lovelies taking advantage of this month’s free shipping sale, has really helped me avoid getting bummed out by winter. I can’t help but think about new fabrics and new designs for spring dresses every time I spread the boldly coloured summer fabrics out on my cutting table. I think it might be time to order my spring fabric swatches:

Valentine’s Day is coming! A sentence which, although my husband and I prefer a low-key Valentine’s observance,  always get me excited because it means my birthday is coming too. So forgive me, Valentine’s haters, because I’m about to talk about all the sweet-as-candy stuff coming into the shop for that special day that comes a few days before my special day.

For starters, I’m thinking about bringing back The Classified Dress, making it available for a limited edition “pre-order” until Valentine’s Day. Which really just means, I won’t be ordering fabric until I have an order for the dress. This extends the production time but it also minimized the risk for me, making it possible for me to offer the dress at a more pleasing price.
