Pictures from Panama City

In the spirit of Earth Day, I want to present Panama City as it really is.

I could have easily cropped out all of the construction workers, squatters and scaffolding, but that isn’t want this picturesque city of contrast looks like. In Casco Viejo, the old French Quarter of the Panama City, every third building is undergoing massive renovations as they try to reclaim this twice torched part of their history.

Some buildings have been restored to their former grandeur and breathtaking beauty while others sit as empty shells, waiting for their turn to be reclaimed. The city has strict rules about not altering the exteriors of these buildings. Leading by example, the city repaved the old roads of the neighbourhood with authentic, old style brick to bury all the modern power and communication cables.

When you walk through the neighbourhood, gazing up at the terraced buildings and catching glimpses of skyscrapers and ocean down its narrow streets, you really do feel as if you’ve been transported to a different time and place, separate from the modern city and modern world. But as beautiful as this city and its people’s efforts to restore these scorched and crumbling blocks are, they aren’t out of the woods yet. Climate change, El Niño and drought have joined the long list of threats to the people and the landscape of Panama.

There are brush fires – some controlled and contained, some wild and ferocious – burning in the hills and along the highways. There are villages without drinking water. Many homes and businesses collect rainwater during the wet season to be used to flush toilets in the dry summers. We are nearly one month into the wet season now without a single drop of rain so many of these toilets are no longer working. Last year, when the rains didn’t come until November, severe water restrictions and an air conditioning ban were put into place. The airports, malls, hotels and office buildings of Panama City were not permitted to run air conditioners during the day. The water levels in the lakes and rivers that feed the Panama Canal are devastatingly low. If the rains don’t come soon, restrictions will have to be placed on the size of ships that can enter the Panama Canal – the largest Panamax ships are built to have only 24 inches of clearance in the locks. If this happens, the price of almost everything will increase around the globe.

As you scroll through the pictures of this beautiful city, country and world today, consider all of the things you may take for granted and all of the things you can do to minimize your impact on this incredible environment we all share.

Panama Pajamas

These are my favourite pajamas of all time. The only others that come close are the polka dot nighties my mom made for me when I was a kid – she had to make a second one when I grew out of the first one – that were nearly identical to this adult version. They are light, elegant and modest enough to wear when travelling with friends of the opposite gender. And the best part is, I got them on sale for only $8! Of course I knew I had to pack them for a girl’s week in Panama with my mom to celebrate her 50th birthday.

It was my second ever airplane trip and my first since the year 2000. I was clueless when it came to packing my carry-on bag and the contents read like a list of my favourite things:

  • snacks for the plane (beef jerky and blueberry Greek yogurt granola bars)
  • one DSLR camera (Nikon D5100)
  • one waterproof disposable camera (Fujifilm QuickSnap Waterproof)
  • two books (Philip Hoare’s The Whale: In Search of the Giants of the Sea and Alice Munro’s Lives of Girls and Women)
  • one pair of sunglasses
  • two pairs of pajamas (including these)
  • one blouse

I would have been in a whole lot of trouble if the airline had lost my suitcase, but I would have saved my most cherished possessions from a life in The Land of Lost Luggage.

March Favourites

March is definitely going out like a lion around here. The past couple of weeks have been cold, wet and windy, with temperatures reminiscent of our mild February. After a winter that felt more like early spring, and a spring that is having trouble getting started, everyone is extra eager to see those first signs that spring is finally here to stay. Here are my favourite things for that time of year when the snowdrops are in bloom and the puddles have only just stopped freezing over.

Worker Bee

When I was born in the late 80s, my parents gave me a popular Canadian first name, my mother’s British middle name and my father’s Irish last name. Although my first name, Melissa, is of Greek origin, meaning bee, it was quite common at the time in Canada, placing in the top 20 baby names of that year. My parents did a great job of representing my complete heritage in just three names. Now that I’m married and have taken the last name of a man – because I’m romantic like that – with English and Scottish ancestors, I sometimes feel like I’ve lost a little piece of myself. Perhaps that’s why I’m always careful to keep my Irish/Canadian family traditions alive.

One of the most important and valued things I’ve inherited from my Irish ancestors is the strong work ethic and fearless desire for something better that each generation has instilled in the next since arriving in Canada at the height of the Potato Famine. Though eating porridge with lots buttered toast, for dipping, will always be a close second.

I can’t help thinking about my family while working hard to keep up with orders and prepare for market season on this sunny St. Patrick’s Day. Though the hard part may be over for us, that never quit, never give up attitude passed down from my great-grandparents, to my grandparents, to my parents is still alive in me today. That endless list of personal and professional ideas, goals and plans that anyone else would see as unrealistic and unachievable ebbs and flows as we do the things that once seemed impossible and make even bigger plans for the future. To me, this (and porridge with toast) is what it means to be an Irish-Canadian.
