New Year

New Year | Sophster-Toaster Blog

I’m not quite sure if I needed a break from blogging to recharge my creativity or just to work on other projects. Perhaps one achieved the other. I missed photographing the most beautiful season, but I found a lot of time to explore and build other hobbies, interests and skills.

I read books about kalsarikännit, photography and a good chunk of a Russian novel, learned how to be more eco-friendly, studied another language, watched movies, hiked, skated, worked on the house and started developing a whole new product for my shop. I tried to figure out where I want to go personally, professionally, physically in 2020: a year that sounds so futuristic child-me thought I’d never get here.

I don’t often take breaks, but I think this one really did me some good. I’m ready to work hard, rest when I need to, and take on whatever the new year has in store for me.

Back in Colour

I had been envying women with bold hair colours for a while when I came across Lime Crime’s Unicorn Hair. I browsed the rainbow of unique hair colours and thought it might be fun to dye my decade+ naturally chestnut brown hair an exciting bright pink. That was almost a year ago. Since then, I have been working to get my long dark hair light enough to go pink while trying to damage it as little as possible.

Over the course of ten months, I went from natural chestnut, to sort of auburn, to “bronde”, to decidedly blonde, to pink. I started, regrettably, by trying to lighten my hair as much as possible, without bleach, by using a home dying kit. I got maybe one level lighter but not nearly light enough for the pink to show if I were to dye it then. I waited two months after that for my hair to grow, fade and recover. This time, knowing I would need to bleach, I made the right choice and booked an appointment at the salon for some dark blonde, warm/neutral balayage highlights. My stylist did a fantastic job working through and blending out the box dye. My hair still felt quite healthy after this but, nevertheless, I waited another six months to bleach again, all the while babying my hair with few washes, cool water, fancy shampoo and conditioner, and very little heat styling. At my next balayage appointment, we really went for it and took me up to a full blonde, deciding to leave lots of natural, healthy, new growth hair at the roots. After enjoying the fruits of my labour and living as a blonde (for the first time in my life!) for another two months, I went pink with a semi-permanent, deep conditioning dye that made me, and my hair, very happy.

After nearly a year of getting my hair to a point where I could play with colour, and being stuck at boring transition shades, I can’t wait to try out new looks as the seasons change.

Black & White

Black & White | Sophster-Toaster

As a way to push myself creatively, and really learn the ins and outs of light and shadow, I’m challenging myself to only take photos in black and white this month.

I learned the basics of photography on high saturation 90’s colour film and then graduated to bright and clear digital, completely missing any opportunity to practice without the easy allure of colour. I’ve spent most of my time focusing on the interplay of colours in my images, using them to draw attention or conceal. For the most part, I’ve striven for scenes that are well and evenly illuminated. I’ve played with light here and there, but why use light to create drama and intrigue when I’m surrounded by all these dazzling colours?

When switching into black and white, the first thing I noted was that I needed to change the way I look at anything I want to photograph. No longer am I looking for complementary colours and brightly lit spaces, now I need to see the world in light and dark, geometric shapes, and shadows.

I decided to take my first honest stab at black and white in the comfort and control of my little home studio. I set up and found right away that taking pictures the way I do in colour, results in flat, boring and dull images. (What do you mean this black sweater and these dark blue jeans are reading as the same colour!?) Instead of trying to mimic the natural light coming in through the window and basically bumping up the total light in the room, I found I had to light my backdrop indirectly. I had to bounce light off the walls and ceiling while lighting myself with one light higher than usual and off to the side, thus making the window light the only true, direct illumination. I had fun stepping in and out of the shadows and seeing how things changed in my photos. I’m quite looking forward to how much I have to learn this month.

T-shirt Weather

It finally feels like spring is here in Canada. There’s a still a bit of snow kicking around in the shadows, but it looks like we’ve seen the last of the under 5°C days. After a very long and drawn-out winter, it seems like we’re jumping right into late spring/early summer. It’s officially safe to put our boots and shovels away and pull out the sundresses and lawn chairs. It’s perfect timing, since my first t-shirts of the spring/summer season are just coming out and my first market of the season is this weekend!

I’m so excited about my first new screen print shirts of the year! I hooked up with an amazing North American made t-shirt brand for my nostalgic, double binding ringer tee and paired it with classic Cooper Black for a fun vintage vibe. I used a really neat UV ink that looks nearly invisible indoors but shows up the second you walk out into the sunshine! I had so much fun wearing this shirt around and seeing how the ink responded. I’m also planning to make a regular ink version in the same golden yellow colour for a lower price-point tee for anyone who likes the print so much, they want it to show all the time.
