Strawberry Jammer Skater Skirt

I’ve been learning to skate with Niagara Roller Derby all winter and this skirt, with its sweet strawberry print on lightweight cotton, bias cut in a full circle, was decidedly inspired by my new obsession. It’s all I think about and, I’ve been told, all I talk about, so I’m not surprised the first piece I turned out for the warmer weather would look great on skates.

I can’t wait to wear this skirt as I skate downtown to grab a strawberry radler on a hazy summer evening. When working on and wearing this skirt, I couldn’t help but think about the summer sun casting bold shadows on tree-lined streets, the sound of cicadas, and the feeling of that first cooler breeze after the sun finally sets rustling in the light fabric of this full skirt and the soft pink lining underneath.

Fall is for Night Skies and Lullabies

I loved this skirt when I made it in velvet for last winter. The fabric was soft, lush and lovely but very thick and heavy. It’s really only wearable for people who live in parts of the world that see long, cold winters. I wanted to bring the design to more seasons, and more people, so I made a lighter version in organic cotton sateen! The fabric is still heavier and more tightly woven than a basic, breezy cotton and has a subtle sheen to it too, giving it just the right amount of warmth and texture for fall layering.

Always Sunny

We were recently up at the cottage with some of the best weather I’ve ever seen there. I’ve been going up to my husband’s family cottage for almost a decade now and this was the first time we’ve been up during a summer heat wave and not for the cold and rainy spell right before or after. The weather was hot, sunny and gorgeous everyday but one out of the trip, making this regular, water-based ink version of my Hello Sunshine Tee the perfect thing to wear as we lounged by the lake.

The Cat’s Meow Dress

I was half way through making the sample for the new Cat’s Meow Dress when I realized I was deigning my first could-be wedding dress. I had it in mind all along as a dress the could be dressed up and go more formal, giving it a longer hemline and adding delicate lace trim and topstitching details to the bodice, but didn’t clue in to its potential until I was holding a quirky, yet elegant white dress in my hands. The funny thing is, this is almost exactly the type of dress I had in mind when I was dreaming of a small, courthouse wedding before my husband and I ultimately decided to go with an intimate garden ceremony instead. I think it’s quite charming paired with the same shoes, gloves and earrings I wore to my own wedding!
